Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/64 inches (2.58 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess Argent and Azure, in chief a representation of Diamond Head Sable, issuant in base a Hawaiian warrior holding in dexter hand a war spear palewise extending overall into chief Proper (Yellow feather cloak with Black crescents, Red feather helmet, Black spear).  Attached below the shield a Blue shield inscribed "MAKAUKAU KAKOU" in Silver.

Symbolism
National flag blue is the branch color used for Infantry units.  The participation of the former organization, then the 298th Regiment Infantry, in the Hawaiian Rebellion of 1895 is indicated by Diamond Head, where one important engagement occurred.  The Hawaiian warrior commemorates the ancient warrior, King Kamehameha, who founded the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 298th Infantry Regiment on 5 May 1936.  It was redesignated for the 227th Engineer Battalion on 25 October 1957.  It was redesignated for the 298th Artillery Regiment on 13 April 1962.  The insignia was redesignated for the 298th Regiment with the description and symbolism revised on 6 March 1997.
